Can the NHIS cover orthopaedic surgery?

  2. Kaothar says:

I was at one of the state hospitals trying to use the NHIS code but I was told they don’t reckon with NYSC’s NHIS yet. I was in an emergency situation so I had to pay. How can I get a refund from NHIS?

    1. Nick Atte says:

      Thanks for reaching out Kaothar.

Getting a refund in this case might not work. We have been sensitized from camp as well as recently on the need to login into NHIS website to know and have access to accredited hospitals. Refund is possible if you visited NHis hospital and they don’t have what it takes to take care of you at that moment. Eg. They told you to get a drug outside the hospital after consulting with them or refer you for surgical procedure in another facility.

What I would advice is to try as much as possible to know the hospitals that you can visit when you fall sick.

Weldone, please I have questions,is it only when a corp member is sick or have any other ailments the NHIS is useful? Can a married corp member who has the history of preterm birth and miscarriage but do not really know the causes and has been told to undergo some medical examinations benefits from NHIS?

        1. Abdulwasiu Gobir says:

pls my question is concerning the issue of NHIS
          pls thus this have limit
or how many times can we make use of it

          1. Nick Atte says:

Hello Gobir, thanks for reaching out. We are not aware of limits to consultations, as of course one cannot be sick all the time. So it’s advised to go there everytime you have health concerns.

Interesting and very informative. My question is; how do we know hospitals around that are NHIS affiliated? Do we just research it or for example i stay in ibadan and UCH is very far from me but i only have to go to UCH?

              1. Nick Atte says:

Hi Williams, thanks for reaching out. When you register on the portal, you will see different NHIS accredited hospitals in your local government. So just go ahead to your portal and try it out.

                Yes Oluwafemi, you can

              2. Precious says:

Hello. Supposing I’ve been scheduled for a surgery, how do I know how percent the NHIS can cover

                1. Nick Atte says:

Hi Precious, sorry for the late reply. You need to go to same hospital and make enquiries as appropriate. However, this being said, NHIS should cover your surgery at ‘zero kobo’ paid by you. But if there are peculiarities, you need to liase with your HMO and NYSC officials in your location to get clarity.

        2. Nick Atte says:

Hi Ifedolapo, thanks for your comment. This is a tricky question, but as far as we know you should be able to go to a health care facility under your HMO for consultations and complaints under which this issue falls. Ordinary under GIFSHIP this is not an issue. So I’ll say give it a try. Let’s also know how it goes.
